The European Parliament has adopted a report on the situation of fundamental rights in the European Union. In her amendments to the report, Lívia Járóka MEP urged an action-oriented strategy for the Roma, which will offer a roadmap with clear objectives for Member States.
The controversial and much debated report dedicates a whole chapter to the European Roma, who constitute the largest minority in the EU and face substantial social exclusion. The document confirms the EP's commitment towards a common European Roma Strategy and declares the priority of combating discrimination in the fields of housing, education and health care.
The report emphasises the vulnerable situation of Roma women facing multiple discriminations.

In her explanation of vote, Mrs Járóka highlighted that the EU can only be credible as a global protector of human rights if it can guarantee the fulfilment of the Charter of Fundamental Rights on its own territory. "We need to develop a complex programme which simultaneously tackles the fields of housing, education, health care and discrimination, as well as triggering instant action in the most under-developed regions", she said. In her amendments to the report, Járóka drew attention to frequent trespassing by the police, ethnic profiling and disproportionate random checks.
